O.K. I'll go first

I thought I should start by introducing myself.

My name is Warren Wilson. I have been an avid photographer since high school myself, though back in the day we had to mix chemicals and load bulk film and worry about the cost of every picture. I like digital a lot more!

I tend to take a lot of landscape photos, outdoors, macro and low-light. I also love travel so I take my hobby with me when visiting foreign lands.

As for equipment, I have always used Nikon: not that I think it's better than the other brands, but I just grew accustomed to it and stuck with it.

I look forward to getting to know you and seeing what kinds of images you enjoy making. So just jump right in!

By the way — I have to mention that this course is open to both senior high students and adults. Unless you specifically ask, you might not know if you're dealing with another high school student or an adult — but I imagine we'll all be very civilized anyway!

  1. Hi Mr. Wilson!

My name is Duncan Ritchie, and I haven't done much in the way of photography. I recently got into it this past summer, when my parents finally decided that they didn't want the task of taking pictures, and voluntold me to do the job.

I learned that I prefer to take pictures of things that aren't quite what they seem, or anything that happens to be ironic. However, I do enjoy taking landscape shots, as well as shots of interesting people. Myself included!

Equipment..... Well, do disposable film cameras count? As I've had plenty of experience on them! Nah, I've been using my parents Cyber-Shot DSC-H5, which I've been told is a decent enough camera, and I've come to enjoy using, however basically. I'm excited to learn how to use some of the more complicated features!

Just in case anybody is interested, I'm in grade 11, and.... mostly civilized!

  2. Hey, My name is Edith Loewen. I'm very excited to start your course, even though i've never really taken pictures i want to learn. I like fun pictures, not anything to serious! I've never really thought about taking course like this because i didn't think i would like it, but it sounds really cool, and my parents both think i need to get out and do more things! hahaha. I'm in grade 11, and I'm here to learn something totally new!!!!

  3. Hi Mr Wilson,
My name is April Luney and I'm very excited about taking this course.
Photography is one of my hobbies and I just bought my first SLR Nikon D5000 camera this year with a 18-55mm lens. As far as my knowledge in photography goes I don't know much yet. But I am eager to learn. Photography is my career goal for after I graduate so I hope this course gives me a good jump start :)

  4. Hello Mr.Wilson!

My name is Barbara Zehetmeier. I don't have a lot of background in photography, as up until now I have been taking occasional pictures, but never have thought of taking it to a higher level. I am very eager to learn different techniques and ways to improve my photography though. My main focus has been nature, either scenery or close up views of cool textures. I would really like to expand and try different styles though this year, so I am very excited for this course 8)

  5. Hey Mr.Wilson!
I am Eva Braun, haha, no I was not named after Hitler's wife in case you were wondering. I'm in grade 12 and I'm super excited about this course!
Photography is something that I really enjoy and have been thinking about seriously getting into for some time now. Until now I have just been taking pictures for fun and have not really been putting any thought behind them, I would love to learn how to make my photographs more meaningful. My style seems to be very much directed to close-ups and texture as well as anything bright and colourful.
I am planning on purchasing a camera in the very near future and would love some input on which one I should get...

  11. Hi Warren,
My name is Linda Gibos and I am an adult student. (I am also the computer support worker at the Northern BC Distance Education School in FSJ!) I just received a new digital camera for my birthday at the end of September and decided I should learn how to use it. I have a Canon PowerShot SX20IS - which means absolutely nothing to me - but I'm assuming it will soon!

My name is Alannah. Kids who know me call me the picture lady. I take photos of practically everything and love it!

  14. Hi Warren
My name is Naomi and my mother adores you. I'm taking this course because I love photography, plain and simple. I think a good photo invokes some sort of an emotional change in the viewer. I never think of the photo I'm taking, I just try to capture how I view the world. I hope to learn some new ideas and knowledge on how to portray that and am really looking forward to it.

  15. Hello,
I'm Natasha Hansler, and I've loved photography ever since I was a little kid. However, only in the past couple of years did I start taking it seriously. I currently use a Nikon D3000, and I love doing portrait and nature photography. I like doing other types as well, but these two are my favourite. I'm really looking forward to improving my photgraphy through this course.

  19. Hi!
My name is Shelby. I have been interested in photography for quite a few years now, just wasn't able to take any courses, but have hundreds of varied pictures all of kinds. I just have a somewhat simple FujiFilm Finepix camera... I don't know what all the numbers mean that are written by the lens though! I am hopefully in the next few months going to upgrade to a Canon Rebel or the new Olympus Pen. I love taking pictures when I get the chance to, but would like to get some more in depth knowledge to make my pictures even better than they are!

  20. Hi everyone

My name is Susan...a recently retired grey haired wanderer. I love taking pictures of landscapes and wildlife. One of the most basic notes about good (or lucky) photos is to just get out there! I think most of my best photos were lucky catches. Now, I hope to get beyond that stage. Looking forward to leaning:-)

  21. Hi Everyone! What a diverse classroom community! I am an adult student, which is a bit of a switch for me as I am also a teacher. I believe in lifelong learning so here I am in a photography course and I'm excited to learn how to take better pictures of the places I visit and my family. Just finding this thread to comment was a learning experience so I know I'm going to learn a ton! :) Kim Boettcher

  23. My name is Lynn. I love taking landscape and animal pictures. I want to learn to use my camera so that I am not just taking snapshots. I am looking forward to exploring what my camera can do for me.

  24. Hello Mr. Wilson. I am an adult student and this is my lame attempt at an introduction. I am sitting next to two ladies who say that this is a suck up comment! I disagree.
I have played with a camera since the heady days of high school dark rooms - which was about 40 years ago. I like the idea of taking pictures but I don't have the eye for a good photo that so many people have. I like taking pictures in extreme situations and have drowned more than one camera when I put it in the water in what, I was sure, was a waterproof box. My father never did forgive me for that.
I like the idea of learning to develop my eye to see better pictures.
I am looking forward to beating on that idea.

  25. Hi Mr. Wilson. I have been taking photos for a few years. My favourite is landscape, although I've been experimenting with portraits. Some have turned out not too bad. My goal is to take photos for a garden magazine. My other goal is to travel the Maritimes and photograph lighthouses and lobster traps on the beach....just like you see on TV. In the mean time I will stick with my barns!! I would like to go to southern Alberta to get some new barn photos.

  26. Hello Mr Wilson! My name is Cassy Liedtke. I am in grade 12, I have been playing with photography for a couple of years. I enjoy taking portraits of my friends and family, and especially my dogs. I also enjoy sports action shots of runner's, figure skaters, and body builders, along with other athletes. I shoot with a Nikon D5100 with various lens which I love, it has some amazing features and effects that I very much enjoy playing with. My goal is to learn more about photography then just taking the picture. I am looking forward to going out on the edge and try some different styles. I am hoping to gain more experience throughout this course with a well qualified teacher such as yourself giving me helpful hints and advise for producing a more well rounded photography portfolio.
    Thanks! Cassy.

  31. Hello,
My name is Boby Wagner, I am an adult, and I was born and raised in Terrace. I have loved cameras and photography since childhood, but only recently purchased my first DSLR. My Nikon D3100 is my new favourite "toy" and it is a fantastic camera. I love taking pictures with it but definitely feel that still have a lot to learn.
I really have no specific subject that I prefer to photograph, but looking through my pictures it is clear I enjoy nature and colour. I would like to improve my sports/action photography because I enjoy bringing my camera with me snowboarding and to the gymnastics club .
I am looking forward to learning how to use my camera to it's fullest capabilities and just developing my skills overall.

My name is Shane Groot. I started liking photography in grade 8. My favorite types of photos are with people in them outside. I don’t have that good of a camera anymore and I’m saving for a new one. My Canon G8 was just stolen out of my car.On a happier note I’m looking forward to jumping in and seeing an improvement in my work.

  34. I am so glad to be able to join this class. I have a goal of learning to shoot pictures the way I picture them in my mind's eye, something that eludes me way too often! I have used the "auto" function on my Nikon D3000 with good success, but I just know it is capable of so much more. And I am too. Michele Ebright

  35. Hi Mr. Wilson!

My name is Madison Cook, I'm a 16 year old actress and model. I've spent most of my life behind the camera but this past year I've spent my fair share in front of it. I've recently upgraded to a Cannon Mark 2 5d, and its capable of amazing things but so far I've mostly stuck with using the video component. I mostly do photography with models as I enjoy not only working with the camera and location but being able to use people to create the shot I'm looking for. You can find out more about me at www.madisonpcook.com, and for continues updates please add me on my Facebook at www.facebook.com/madisonpcook.

Thanks and can't wait to start class!

I have a Nikon D5100 with a 18-55mm lens, but I'm hoping to get a bigger zoom lens as well as a good tripod in the near future
